Energy Committee Meeting Minutes

June 10, 2010

Sharon Community Center, 7:00 PM

Attendees: Patricia Bluestein, Lynn Wolbarst, Silas Fyler,

George Aronson, Craig Edwards, Rosemary Tambouret and Dave McCabe.

1.  Guests:  Michael Passantino and Brent Moyers of Energenics  Systems.  A presentation was made as Energenics is interested in installing solar panels on the old town landfill on Mountain Street.  Many different financing and income options were discussed and it was agreed that the committee would pursue the town’s interest.  After the presenters left, the committee discussed some of the potential problems.  It was agreed that George Aronson and Silas Fyler would work on a letter and presentation to show Ben Puritz first.  We would then plan a presentation in front of the selectman.  The idea is promising as even though the town had signed a new contract to purchase electricity from Trans-Canada, this could be just a cash cow for the town.

2.  On June 7th a meeting was held with Committee members George, Ed and Lynn with Ben Puritz and Eric Hooper.  It was hoped that the town would be willing to include a line in the budget to deal with energy costs.  The feeling was that the town department managers have enough to deal with and that there would be no benefit to having them micro-manage their energy costs.

3.  Ameresco had made an energy savings presentation to the committee earlier in the year.  The committee believes there is possible cooperative measures with the schools.  That theory is now in flux with the departure of the energy manager from the schools.  Possible sources of funds to finance energy conservation measures include the street light fund or recycling fund.  We should also purse other Esco companies like Johnson Controls for complete audits and Noresco whose numbers looked like it is possible.

4.  Compiling a list of town buildings and town energy projects that have been done and to be done, energy usage per building as a matrix of audits.  The stated goal is to get to 20% energy reduction in 5 years.  We need to prepare a Baseline Energy Use data listing audits completed and measures implemented.

5.  2010 Energy/Water Fair, Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Sharon High School.

Committed participants include the Boy Scouts, Neponset River Watershed Organization, Bay State Gas and NStar.  Expected organizing help from Neponset River Watershed, possibly the Taunton River Watershed and the Regional Energy Committee.  The list of vendors from the past event was divided up by the committee to make phone calls to determine interest for this year.

Next meeting scheduled for July 15th at 7:30 PM.
