SHARON BOARD OF HEALTH

JUNE 4, 2012

SELECTMEN’S MEETING ROOM

The meeting of the Sharon Board of Health was called to order at 7:45 PM by Suzi Peck, Chair.  In attendance were:  Suzi Peck, Chair, Jay Schwab, Vice-Chair, Stanley Rosen, Andy Stead, and Ed Welch.

Also in attendance were:  Adam Giandomenico, Erez Krimsky, Richard Powell, Greg Meister, Joanne Craig, Ben Puritz.

Richard Powell presented the Article 28 and 17 proposals from Attorney Gellerman and a copy is on file. Article 17 needs clarification.  Issues discussed included:  Town meeting vote, BOS policies as Park Commissioner, special license would ensure compliance and not a significant number of complaints received from the community about dogs on the beach. The proposal does not specify Sharon residents only and would need to be included.  The BOS would provide signage and gloves using the licensing fees to offset the water quality testing. 

Jay presented an article about the health hazards of parasites in dog feces and soil contamination. The only way to prevent exposure is with a total ban.

Stan stated that there are no lakes in surrounding communities that allow dogs during the swimming season. 

Suzi explained that the BOH errs on the side of caution and it needs to be determined if this is a theoretical vs. actual problem.  Information received contradicts the issue. Daily monitoring by the ACO can document dog feces and report back in three weeks.  The BOH questioned what is an acceptable threshold.

Conservation spoke that people do not want dogs on the beach during the season and an immediate ban should be placed. 

A motion was made by Suzi using Stan’s language on the ban take effect three weeks from now unless it shows there is no problem and then it will be rescinded.  (Copy on file) Second/Schwab.  (Vote)  In favor: Peck/Rosen/Schwab; opposed:  Stead/Welch.

Role call was taken to enter into executive session for the purposes of reviewing resumes received for Health Administrator position.  (Peck/aye, Schwab/aye, Rosen/aye, Stead/aye, Welch/aye)

BOH meeting scheduled for 6/25/12.

Regular BOH meeting adjourned at 9:40 PM.
