April 15, 2003
The regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at 7:30 P.M. in the Sharon Town Offices with Chair Allen M. Garf, and Selectmen Norman Katz and Walter Joe Roach and Town Administrator Benjamin E. Puritz.
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 P.M.
Minutes
VOTED: (Roach/GARF) Voted 2-0 (N. Katz abstained) to approve the Minutes of April 8, 2003, including Executive Session.
Supplemental Reserve Fund Transfer - Fire/Ambulance - Chief Mann
Town Administrator Puritz discussed the need for a supplemental Reserve Fund Transfer for the Fire Department. A request for $55,716 was previously forwarded to the Finance Committee prior to the settlement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the firefighters and an additional $28,581.00 is needed for FY03 to include the retroactive pay increase.
VOTED: (Katz/Roach) Voted unanimously to approve the forwarding of a supplemental $28,581.00 Request for Reserve Fund Transfer to the Finance Committee for the Fire Department.
Request for Banner
VOTED: (Katz/Roach) Voted unanimously to approve a banner for the Sharon Lions Club for the dates of April 22 - April 29, 2003.
Incident of April 14, 2003
Town Administrator Puritz read a Memorandum from Chief Bernstein, dated April 15, 2003 re incident involving juvenile with handgun. There was a summary of the incident where officers responded to a residence on East Foxboro Street. Chief Bernstein wished to apprise the Board of a job well done not only by members of our Police Department, but our Fire Department, Department of Public Works, and numerous other member agencies of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council.
Members of the Board expressed appreciation for the many agencies working together and for the successful outcome with no one injured.
After Prom Party Fundraiser
The Board reviewed correspondence from Vivian Selenow and The Class of 2003, dated April 8, 2003 re the annual fundraiser for the After Prom Party.
VOTED: (Katz/Roach) Voted unanimously to approve the request to conduct another fundraising event on Saturday, May 3 with raindate of May 10 using “toll booths” set up at the Town Center for the benefit of the Sharon After-Prom Program and Graduation Party and with notification to the Police Department.
Local Aid
The Board discussed the process of approving budgets at Town Meeting without having the final budget figures for local aid. Options will be keeping the meeting open or calling for a Special Town Meeting after the local aid figures are received.
Executive Session
VOTED: (Katz/Roach) Voted unanimously to enter into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing matters of Collective Bargaining and Pending Litigation, and at the conclusion thereof, to adjourn for the evening
The Board entered into Executive Session at 8:05 P.M.
