Minutes of 10/09/2003 - Summary
Summary of Minutes for the 10/9/03 WMAC Meeting

Reviewed and approved 9/11/03 minutes with changes.

Roger Thibault withdrew his resignation.

Cliff Towner made a 20-minute presentation. He faulted the consultants’ recommendations to the Sharon Water Department for resulting in:

• the drilling of Well #8 (the Islamic Center) in an inappropriate location.
• the development of a computer model of Sharon’s water supply using 1,500 gpm for four hours instead of 500 gpm for two hours to fight a fire in the Hampton Road Area.
• questionnable pipe replacement projects.

Mr. Towner, after urging the WMAC to provide a list of its priorities to the Selectmen, made the following recommendations:

• do not become dependent on external sources of water.
• install a filtration system to remove iron and manganese from Well #6.
• replace 2,000 feet of 6" pipe along Morse Street with 10" pipe.
• establish an emergency connection to MWRA water in case of well failure.
• build a new well.

Eric Hooper rebutted Mr. Towner’s presentation. He characterized it as inaccurate and oversimplified. Mr. Hooper reviewed progress on the hydraulic model for the town water distribution system, after which he presented his Five Year Capital Projects Plan. He identified his immediate priorities as:
• study the feasibility of obtaining water from MWRA and Aquaria.
• replace A/C pipe on Edge Hill Road and Tiot Street.
• install radio read water meters.
• purchase 30 acres of land on Maskwonicut Street for a new well.
• complete the Pine Street loop.

WMAC recommended prioritizing a filtration system for Well #6.

A subcommittee was formed to study water conservation.

David Grasfield recommended reviewing the charter of the WMAC.

Richard Mandell will arrange for a Sharon High School student to attend the next WMAC meeting.

Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 11/6/03 at 7:30 PM.
